Welcome to ChicagoDogNose.com and thanks for visiting with us. This site will be mostly about the new urban sport referred to as “Nose Work”.
This new sport is known as K9 Nose Work® and the only official sanctioning and organizing body is the National Association of Canine Scent Work ™ (NACSW) http://www.funnosework.com/
See the word “fun” in the URL, that is because there is a focus on allowing and helping the dog and the handler/owner to have fun. It is the most fun sport I have experienced, both as a owner and as a handler as well as an instructor. Try it, your dog will thank you.
The founders of this rapidly growing sport bring a combined whopping 75+ years of dog training experience. But they are quick to point out that this sport is not about training the dog, obedience training must be left at the door. It is more about facilitating the development of the dogs’ instinctual use of their nose and their natural desire to hunt, being rewarded with food/treats, toys and the opportunity to have fun.
The Co-Funders: Ron Gaunt, Amy Herot, CPDT-KA and Jill Marie O’Brien, CPDT-KA, all from California started this organization in June of 2006, held the first competition in August 2008 and the first official titling event in January 2009.
The rapid growth stems from the wisdom of the founders in organizing the sport as well as the sport being appropriate for all types of dogs. It is my opinion that all dogs can benefit from this sport and it has been my pleasure to see that happen many times.
This web site will focus on K9 Nose Work® with the purpose of the dissemination of information to help this sport grow.
The fastest growing dog sport (referred to as Nose Work)
is spreading across the country.
The NACSW™ (National Association of Canine Scent Work) now has almost 2000 current members living in 42 states and 3 Canadian provinces. This is compared to 1175 members in the 2010-2011 membership year.
We have over 2700 registered dogs.
The inaugural K9 Nose Work® trial was held in 2009 (just 3 years ago).
The first trial outside of Southern California was in Oct 2010 – just 16
In 2010 we had 6 trial days in one state
In 2011 we had 43 trial days in 7 states
It looks like we will significantly increase the number of trial days in 2012 over what we did in 2011 and we are already adding new states in 2012 (IL, MD, AK, and many more in the works).
We now have 167 CNWI’s and ANWI’s listed on our website listing living in 27 US states and 1 Canadian province.
Find a CNWI and experience some fun time with your dog(s). They will absolutely love this new activity and the sport. Nose Work is my passion and I have not seen a dog that does not enjoy the hunt.
Come join us in the fun of Nose Work.
